Writing Artist’s Statements | Visual Arts Center of Richmond

This writing class dives into the world of artist’s statements and is geared toward artists at any stage in their studio practice. During class time, you will complete exercises to develop a unique writing practice. The instructor will present about the ways artists have used the written word historically and about how artist’s statements shape contemporary art practices. We will read and discuss artist’s statements and texts about art writing. You will write two different artist’s statements and the instructor will facilitate time for each artist to receive individualized feedback from the entire group (both instructor and peers) on their statements.

You will leave the class with multiple resources, useful writing prompts, and a robust set of suggested edits for your statements. You will develop a diversified awareness of approaches and methods for writing about visual art and increase your effectiveness in using the written word to advocate for professional opportunities.

Testimonials

  • "Our time with Sarah was meaningful and each artist had a chance to get direct and important feedback on their statements. I walked away feeling more confident in my ability to describe my artwork and put it into words for my viewers. I feel excited to explore the world of art writing whereas before it was a bit daunting! Sarah provided helpful feedback, resources and prompts for practice. I highlight recommend participating!"

  • "Sarah’s mentorship is like a coffee chat with your favorite professor. She is encouraging and inquisitive, offering questions, prompts, references, and feedback that will stick with you and propel your practice forward!"

  • "Working with Sarah has strengthened my work and invited curiosity and deeper thinking about the smallest of details. She has introduced me to philosophical structures that I didn't know existed and never thought I'd be able to access. Her kindness, rigour and ability to find connections between so many different ways of thinking and being is amazing to experience. I also find that those drawn to work with her are like minded and my community of artists has grown from working in groups and one on one with Sarah."
